Sometimes it’s the small things that send us astray.
One day you are totally crushing it, then just a few days, weeks, or even months later you find yourself completely off course.
I’ve been there too.
Recently I became seriously aware of how much my Certified Specialist of Wine progress had slowed. The last couple of months have been filled with projects, traveling, and lots of fun with friends and family. I let myself get derailed by all those shiny distractions.
I needed to get back on track in a big sort of way.
So I began implementing different strategies to guide me back to my path. Not only am I back in the groove; I’m feeling pretty jazzed about reaching my big goal (CSW exam) in the near future.
I understand what it takes to stop idling and start feeling re-energized. The four motivating tips listed below will effect an immediate and amazing attitude change.
#1 – Go Back to the Beginning
Remember why you set your goal in the first place. When did you decide to crush it? What sparked your heart? Where did that exhilaration come from, and why can you still feel it now? Take a moment and let yourself feel the excitement you first felt when dreaming your dream.
Identify or recapture your goal, write it down and post it in a place of prominence – above your desk, on the bathroom or rearview mirror, etc. Let it serve as daily inspiration!
#2 – Get Cracking!
If you are a morning person, rejoice, for this will be easy. If, however, you are like me and find yourself justifying that tenth snooze button smash, this may be a challenge.
Get. Up. Early.
There are only so many hours in the day. If you have a full-time job, or kids, or other comparable adult responsibilities, chances are you’ll find yourself fatigued at the end of the day, with your goals unaddressed, let alone achieved.
So, set that alarm, get up when you hear it, and start the day invigorated! You can do it!
#3 – Meditate
‘Meditation’ can be a tricky term due to its many religious and spiritual applications, but boiled down, it’s a word that encompasses the ultimate goal of a peaceful, practical mindset. The Merriam-Webster definition:
1: to focus one’s thoughts on: reflect on or ponder over
2: to plan or project in the mind
Meditation can be making to-do lists.
It can be day-dreaming.
Or focusing and honing your thoughts toward a daily task.
Heck, maybe for you it is sitting cross legged on a pillow and doing traditional meditation.
The point is this: devote time every day to visualize and think about the road ahead. Tap into your imagination and think about what your success looks like. What are you doing, today, to reach that goal?
#4 – Reward Yourself
When was the last time you gave yourself a pat on the back? You are working hard and deserve a prize!
Monday – did you meet your daily task? Gold star.
Tuesday – did you meet your daily task? Gold star.
Friday – do you have a week’s worth of stickers? Wine time!
Choose whatever reward you wish, of course. But I’m telling you –knowing you get to treat yourself will get you through the hard days and hard parts. I am going to have a HUGE party when I pass my exam!
Take Action!
Follow these four steps, and I promise you’ll almost immediately breathe life back into your goals.
Feeling motivated? Only YOU can realize your dreams, so get moving!
