Every once in a while I get the urge to bake.
Generally this ends in one of three ways: tears, laughter, or on a good day – deliciousness.
I recently had a good day and the cake I made is just way too yummy not to share! *This post contains affiliate links.
Last week when I was looking through my great-grandma’s 1980s-era cookbook, I came across a recipe entitled Quick Wine Cake by Carol Standley.
I do not know Carol, but she’s my kind of gal!
Quicker than you could say Cabernet, I was out the door and at the grocery store gathering ingredients.
Here’s what you’ll need (according to recipe):
1 pkg Duncan Hines yellow cake mix
1 pkg Jell-O vanilla pudding
5 eggs
¾ cup oil
2 tbsp flour
1 cup white wine
½ tsp cinnamon if desired
(Note: I deduced that Miss Standley’s simple declaration of “oil” meant vegetable oil, and although I wanted to add cinnamon, I sadly did not have any and didn’t realize it until it was too late.)
The white wine type wasn’t specified. I chose Moscato because it’s sweet and low in alcohol.
Fun Wine Fact: Moscato is made from the Muscat wine grape. It’s known best in its slightly sparkling form, which hails from the Asti region of Piedmont, Italy. Hence its full name Moscato d’Asti.
I crossed my fingers and hoped this bottle of wine would be a good choice.
*Spoiler Alert: It was!
The recipe directions are very simple:
Mix all together and beat 10 minutes with an electric beater. Put it in greased and floured Bundt pan and bake for 60 minutes at 350°F. Cool for 5 minutes, then turn out on a cake plate.
I followed the directions exactly.
Voila!
A perfectly delicious-looking cake!
Since there were no instructions for a glaze, I used a flour sifter to dust powdered sugar over the top for a finishing touch!
Then it came time to taste test…
The cake paired excellently with my glass of Moscato.
It turned out moist and dense and was great on its own, but it’d also go well with fruits such as strawberry and pineapple.
I would HIGHLY recommend this cake for your next potluck, party, birthday, holiday, etc.
Cheers!
